Creating the right environment to inspire 21st century learning and discovery
Outstanding people make an institution extraordinary, and their environment has a profound effect on their ability to shine. Present and future generations of students need to be taught and trained in ideal surroundings equipped with the latest technologies. We want our students, faculty, staff, patients, and patrons to have memorable experiences at UMB, and facilities designed and renovated for the 21st century make that possible.
The pace of our discoveries and the demands of society drive the need for facility renovation and growth. Well-conceived and designed buildings with technologically-advanced laboratories and equipment are essential recruitment tools and indispensable necessities for teaching and research in today's world.
The scientific advances that change our world require space, equipment, and collaboration among top scientists. Health Sciences Facility III will increase the space available to UMB's scientists and clinicians to conduct novel research. Additional lab space will also foster relationships among biologists, geneticists, chemists, and other disciplines in a setting for discovery in critical areas such as medicine, pharmaceutical drug delivery systems, dentistry, and patient care.
The Southern Management Corporation Campus Center will provide a central place where the greater UMB community can come together. This environment will encourage students to combine intellectual life with recreation and social networks; foster friendships among students and UMB's outstanding faculty; and offer a place where shared values can take hold.
Expanding and renovating the School of Pharmacy will not only modernize the facility, but also address a shortage of classroom and office space to support new technologies and 21st-century instructional methods, respond to a surge in new centers of excellence, institutes, and multidisciplinary collaborations on campus. The expansion will also allow the School to increase student enrollment and recruit prominent faculty to address the growing need for quality pharmaceutical health education and patient care.
A new School of Public Health is the next essential component to further UMB's comprehensive approach to address the health issues facing the world. The field of public health is intrinsically multidisciplinary. With a foundation built in biology, faculty and students are able to confront the most pressing diseases of our time by adding to our knowledge of their underlying structure and function. Because preventing disease is at the heart of public health, we also engage the social sciences to better understand health-related behaviors and their societal influences critical elements in educating and empowering people to make healthier lifestyle choices.
