Recruiting and retaining the next generation of faculty
Leadership comes from the top down. Consequently, the caliber of an academic institution is often determined by the quality of its faculty. As with students, faculty are attracted to institutions best equipped to help them reach their professional goals, where they are most likely to be associated with talented colleagues and peers.
One of our greatest challenges over the next decade will be to recruit and prepare hundreds of scholars and scientists to carry on UMB's tradition of excellence as today's leaders retire. In order to compete for the best candidates, we need substantial new resources such as endowed chairs, professorships, and state-of-the-art classrooms and labs.
A named Chair, Professorship, and Faculty Enhancement Fund supports the long-term funding and prestige that are essential to recruit and retain top faculty and provide them with the tools they need to succeed. These funds provide financial support at the discretion of the deans to recruit faculty to meet UMB’s most urgent needs.
